Students pose with their dictionaries, Franklin-McKinley Dictionary Day, April 10, 2008.

Our mission is simple and focused: to donate and distribute dictionaries annually to third-graders in California public schools. Currently we are concentrating on Bay Area schools. As our funding and organization grows, we hope to expand to the rest of the state.

The California Dictionary Project is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization, headquartered in San Francisco, California. We have no religious or political affiliation and are staffed entirely by volunteers. Our funding comes through donations from individuals, foundations, and corporations. We also receive help in the form of donated services such as printing, marketing and web design. Except for incidental expenses, all of the money donated to California Dictionary Project is used to purchase low-cost paperback dictionaries that are then distributed to students in California's public schools. Whenever possible, we partner with local literacy groups and other service organizations to expand our reach and services.

We at California Dictionary Project were inspired by the example of Mary French who founded The Dictionary Project in South Carolina. That program has successfully provided thousands of dictionaries to South Carolina elementary school children and has been profiled on ABC News and The Wall Street Journal.
